SAARTHI • ARJUNA’S DISCERNMENT

One choice opens the next.

Before the Kurukshetra war, two men arrived seeking Krishna’s support. Arjun was a Pandav prince and an accomplished archer. Duryodhan, his cousin, led the opposing side. Their struggle over the kingdom had brought their families to the edge of war. Both understood how much Krishna’s support could matter.

Krishna offered them a choice. On one side stood his army. On the other stood Krishna himself, who would remain unarmed during the battle. Given the first choice, Arjun chose Krishna. Then he made his request: would Krishna become his charioteer?

A charioteer held the reins, guided the horses, and helped a warrior navigate a changing battlefield. Arjun was inviting Krishna into the place beside him from which he would face what came next.

The choice that made a conversation possible

When the armies assembled at Kurukshetra, Arjun asked Krishna to place their chariot between them. He wanted to see those gathered to fight. Across the field stood people woven through his own life: family, teachers, elders, and friends. The consequences of the battle became painfully immediate. His body trembled. His bow slipped from his hand. He questioned what victory would mean at such a cost.

The warrior who had prepared for this moment now faced uncertainty about his duty. Arjun chose to speak about it. He told Krishna that he was confused. He asked for guidance and placed himself in the position of a student. The companion he had chosen before the battle became the teacher to whom he could bring his hardest questions.

Their conversation became the Bhagavad Gita.

Arjun continued to ask questions as Krishna spoke about the Self, duty, action, attachment, and devotion. By the conversation’s close, Arjun said that his confusion had cleared and that he was ready to act. His chain of choices had unfolded: choosing a companion, revealing his uncertainty, asking to learn, and committing himself to action.

The choices we carry

There are moments when the person we invite into a decision helps shape everything that follows. You may be considering a partnership, preparing for a difficult conversation, or deciding where to take your work next. Choosing a guide asks for discernment. So does sharing the part of the decision that leaves you uncertain.

Arjun’s story invites us to consider both choices together. Whose judgment do we trust? What are we willing to reveal and examine in their company?

The story within the piece

Saarthi means charioteer. In WearVedic’s interpretation, the painted peacock at the center evokes Krishna. The cream and gold cords surrounding it represent the relationship that held Arjuna’s questions. Along the necklace, red beads connect one after another, recalling how each choice creates the conditions for the next. Worn close to the heart, Saarthi carries a reminder to choose your guides thoughtfully and enter those conversations with openness.

Whose wisdom will you invite into your next choice?
